Emcy’s Story from Australia

UpRide turns daily rides into data that drives change.

Some drivers seem to forget that cyclists are people, not obstacles. For this UpRider, a routine Saturday morning group ride became a frightening reminder of just how vulnerable cyclists can be, when a 4WD driver with plenty of room to spare chose speed over safety, passing so close the riders felt the rush of air as he flew past. Here is his story.

Every UpRider has a story. Here is Emcy’s.

What happened prior to this incident and why do you record your ride?

Having cycled for a few years now, it’s always a great idea to record all rides, it helps if there is a near miss or incident along the way. Unfortunately, a lot of drivers and cyclists are complacent, which is exactly why we record, to protect ourselves.

On a normal Saturday Zone 2 ride with the crew, riding single file on a busy but well-known road during the early morning, a 4WD was spotted from the rear with plenty of room to their right to pass and give us space. Instead, the driver sped up and came so close that we were only inches away from a serious incident. He passed so fast that both my buddy at the front and I felt the air pressure as he flew by. This is not acceptable, especially when there was plenty of room to move over and give us the space required.

When do you feel most vulnerable as a cyclist?

On any road at almost anytime!

What do you think are the most important things that can be done to improve safety for cyclists on the road?

Ideally, clearly marked cycling lanes and paths with enforced minimum passing distances.

Did you report your incident? What was the reporting process?

Yes – I reported online to Crime Stoppers VIC.

What is your advice for other cyclists?

Stay aware, stay sharp, and always record front and rear.
